At SHoP Architects I created a Space Planning Manual for the many teams across the organization to use as reference when designing plans.
Initially, this manual was rooted in residential plan design. As the manual was utilized by various teams I decided to expand the scope of the document to act as a manual for space planning in general.
In its completed form the Space Planning Manual acts as a strategic guide as well as function manual. It enables teams to quickly focus in on best practices and helped train newer team members on the methods SHoP uses to create successful project.
After distribution, we found it reduced the amount of revision and reworking that the teams had previously encountered and many were using it beyond residential applications as well.
